LLB Housing Law 5LLAW009W SUMMATIVE ASSESSMENT 18.19.

5.
The Research Narrative or Research Trail

You can produce either a research trail or a research narrative, whatever you wish.

The key thing you need to do is to explain what you looked at and how you got to your conclusions.

Some students felt the research trail method was simpler and produced a clearer result. It is not important for the purpose of this assessment what format you choose. Do use the example/template formats suggested with the mock feedback. You can, however, adapt them as you wish if you feel that will produce a clearer result.

The key thing you need to do is to explain how you conducted your research, what you looked at and how you reached your conclusions.

This should be on the same document as your report, following it on a new side of paper.

For this element of the assessment you will not be marked on the skill of writing so if you do this is note form that is acceptable.

You should ideally record:

·
the date you conducted the research

·
which resources you searched (which database, book etc)

·
what search terms you used. With databases, state the section of the database you searched and the search terms you used within that section

·
the relevant primary sources identified, i.e.:

o
Statutes (including reference to the relevant section numbers),

o
SIs (including a reference to the relevant article/regulation/rule)

o
Cases

·
You should copy into the narrative the text any key provisions you found, if space/ the word limit allows. These should, where space allows  include:

o
The text of primary sources you refer to in your report

·
You should refer to any checks you did to ensure that the law was up to date (e.g. note the commencement date and consider any relevant transitional provisions; check that the legislation on which a decision in a case was made has not been amended). Where a provision has been recently introduced or amended you need to record full details of the commencement provision and carefully consider and note any transitional provisions. Where a provision has been in place for a while you will probably not need to look at this in any detail.

Put your student number (not your name) on the research trail or narrative after “Student No:”. The number should be 8 digits long, do not include the “W”.

5.1 Research narrative/trail wordcount

As a guideline, the research narrative or trail should be about 2,000 words (but could be more or less – it should not, however, be less than 1,500 words).

Please put the word count at the end of the research narrative/trail

6. Overall wordcount

The total word limit for the research report and narrative/trail is 3,500 words.

Please put the overall combined wordcount at the end of the entire document

7. Overall Certification

Your assessment must be certified at the end, as follows:

“I certify that by submitting this report and research narrative on Turnitin that this assessment is my own work. Student Number: ……..

The number should be 8 digits long, do not include the “W”.
